Whale Sharks in Belize
Sighting a whale shark in Belize is a rare occurrence, but – oh is it worth the wait!! These mild-mannered fish pay us a visit about four times every year. The most recent visits being between March 20th – 30th. These amazing creatures tend to visit during spring and frequent a unique area on the reef called Gladden Split; approximately 30 miles east of Placencia.
What attracts them to this area?
This region is a super breeding ground and is used by over 20 species of Caribbean fish to release their eggs. However, what really captures their attention is the eggs of the Black Cubera Snappers. These eggs are like ‘food from the gods’ for the whale shark, and they show up like clock-work when spawning is at its peak. Imagine diving with these giants of the sea, while being surrounded by thousands of spawning fish at the same time. This is what makes this experience truly unique.
What’s the best time to visit to get a chance to dive with the Whale Sharks?
Whale Shark Season in Belize usually begins about 2 days before the full moon up until 10 days after, in the months of March, April, May, and June. Now, the sightings are quite rare, and after years of studying their travel patterns, there is a much higher chance to see them in the months of April & May.
